Residents in Witham could soon benefit from new sports facilities under plans to introduce padel courts at the town’s football club.

A planning application has been submitted to transform part of Witham Town Football and Social Club into a modern padel tennis facility, bringing one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports to the town.

The proposal, for the site in Spa Road, includes the construction of five doubles padel courts and two singles courts, all featuring canopy structures.

A new 12-space car park, including a designated disabled bay, is also part of the plans.

The application aims to revitalise an area of the club grounds which are currently described as underused and poorly maintained, with overgrown vegetation and unmanaged landscaping, particularly along its western boundary.

According to the submitted plans, the layout has been carefully designed to maximise use of the available land while meeting Lawn Tennis Association guidance for padel court spacing and operation.

The scheme includes walkways, spectator viewing areas, and improved circulation routes around the site.

The courts themselves would feature modern surfacing in blue and green tone.

Access to the site would remain unchanged, with no alterations proposed to existing vehicle or pedestrian entry points.

A spokesperson for the applicant said the development would enhance the club’s existing facilities and support wider community participation in sport.

They said: “Padel tennis is an increasingly popular and accessible form of sport designed to encourage participation from a wide range of age groups and abilities.

“The proposal represents an appropriate enhancement and diversification of the existing sporting facilities and will contribute positively towards community recreation and active lifestyles.”

They added that the scheme has been designed in line with sustainable development principles and would make effective use of an existing recreational site without harming the surrounding area.

If approved, the development could introduce a new leisure offering to Witham, reflecting the rapid growth of padel across the UK and its appeal as a social and inclusive sport.

The plans are currently pending consideration by Braintree Council.
