Uttlesford Council has announced the death of a serving councillor.

Councillor Alexander Armstrong was first elected as ward member for Great Dunmow North in May 2019 and then re-elected in 2023.

Mr Armstrong, who died on Tuesday, was described as a well-liked and respected member of the council.

During his time as a member, he held several senior positions including cabinet member responsible for sports and leisure between 2019 and 2023.

He was also chair of the licensing and environmental health committee between 2023 and 2025 and vice-chair of the council between 2025 and 2026.

He was also an active and long-standing member of Great Dunmow Town Council.

An Uttlesford Council spokesperson said in a statement: "The council offers its deepest sympathies to councillor Armstrong’s family and friends.

"As a mark of respect, the flag will be flown half-mast at the council offices in Saffron Walden offices, while a minutes’ silence will be observed at the next full council meeting."

Councillor Petrina Lees, leader of the council said: “Alex was a founding councillor for Residents 4 Uttlesford – we will miss his can-do work ethic, warm smile, sense of humour and passion for Great Dunmow. He will be hugely missed.”
