A historic pub in Braintree is entering a new chapter under fresh leadership.

The White Hart, in Braintree, is widely regarded as one of the oldest buildings in the town andhas long been a cornerstone of the community.

But there has been recent speculation about its future, including rumours of potential closure.

New manager Gemma Lythell has reassured locals the much-loved venue is here to stay.

Gemma, 42, officially took over this week and says she is “really excited” and optimistic about what lies ahead.

“It really is a beloved pub in the area,” she said. “I’m really excited for it and what the future holds.”

Having worked in hospitality for several years, Gemma brings experience in house management and operations.

She described her appointment as a “natural step,” having already been part of the team for some time before stepping into the role.

“I’ve been here for a while now, so when the opportunity came up, it just felt like the right progression,” she said.

Gemma is keen to preserve the pub’s identity while gradually raising standards and expanding what it offers.

Maintaining strong ties with the community is central to her vision.

“The White Hart has always been essential for keeping that community spirit,” she said.

“We’re really keen to keep those ties and just continue being that place people can rely on for a long time to come.”

Future plans include a renewed focus on hospitality events, including weddings and private functions, alongside the pub’s existing food and drink offering.

“Our focus is really on hosting weddings and functions, as well as building on what we already do well with the restaurant and pub,” said Gemma.

“We just want to keep investing in the community and making it a place people enjoy coming to.

“I’d love for people to come in, have a meal and see what we’re doing.”
