An MP has criticised the decision to increase charges for drivers using the Dartford Crossing.

Witham MP Dame Priti Patel has strongly opposed the Labour Government's decision to impose increases on the Dartford Crossing tolls.

These increases, announced in a written ministerial statement, will come into effect from September 1 this year

Car drivers will pay £3.50 - up from £2.50. Those on pre-pay will see their costs rise from £2 to £2.80.

Van drivers will face increased charges of £4.20, up from £3, while pre-pay will increase from £2.63 to £3.60.

Dame Priti said: "Labour’s war on the motorist continues and these massive 40 per cent increases in the costs of using the Dartford Crossing are a new tax on those who rely on travelling between Essex and Kent.

"Families and small businesses who are already worse off from Labour’s tax rises will be hit hard by these new charges."
