A NEW green space has been created to help bees continue to thrive in Witham.

Witham Town Council teamed up with the Bee Friendly Trust to create a bee garden on the edge of the River Walk, near River View.

The wildlife haven contains three bee hotels for solitary bees, bird boxes and a selection of vegetation such as rosemary bushes, olive trees, skimmia, euphorbia, cytisus ivy, verbena, cornflowers, sunflowers and geraniums.

There is also an information board with bee facts.

A town council spokesman said: “Witham Town Council and Braintree District Council are both committed to encouraging biodiversity and combatting the effects of climate change locally.

“We will continue to look at ways of supporting our wildlife, promoting nature recovery and ensuring Witham is a beautiful place to live.”

The project has been funded with money from Braintree Council, from a housing developer.

It’s a legal demand by a planning authority for a property developer to contribute money that will enhance and serve the community if planning permission is granted.

The garden is designed to give much needed support for nature, in particular bees whose populations have been in decline worldwide as a result habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change.
