TEMPORARY speed limits and barriers are in place on the A12 after a lorry crash caused severe damage.

The incident happened at about 4am on Monday on the Londonbound carriageway between Junction 22 for Rivenhall and 21 for Witham.

It saw the vehicle hit into the central reservation and a bridge before flipping on its side.

Essex Police shut the road between with National Highways working on the incident throughout the day.

Both lanes were closed for hours, with what was described as a "complex operation" to recover the lorry being completed at about 2pm.

Off the back of the incident, one lane remained closed into the following day.

National Highways has now said a temporary speed limit and barriers will be in place whilst repairs take place.

A spokesman said: "On Monday, a lorry hit a bridge on A12 Londonbound between junction 22 and 21 near Witham, causing extensive damage.

"The bridge has been inspected and is safe but we have temporary barriers and 50mph for ten days while we do bridge repairs.

"Allow extra travel time."
