A CRASH which caused a van to career down an embankment was the reason for disruption on the A12, police officers have confirmed.

One lane of the A12 Londonbound near Witham was closed on Thursday after all emergency services were called to a one-vehicle crash at 8.10pm.

After arriving at the scene of the smash, firefighters found a van which had left the road and was in an embankment.

Thankfully, nobody was trapped inside the vehicle.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Officers attended and assisted by putting a single-lane closure in place while the Essex Fire and Rescue service dealt with this incident.

“The van had been recovered by our Highways colleagues by 5.10am this morning, Friday February 9.”

Nobody was seriously injured as a result of the crash, the East of England Ambulance Service has confirmed.

A spokesman said: "We were called at 8.10pm with reports of a collision on the A12 near Witham.

"We sent one ambulance and an ambulance officer vehicle.

"One person was assessed at the scene and did not require transport to hospital."
