BRAINTREE Council has confirmed a popular market event is taking place after concerns were raised by market stall owners that it had been cancelled.

The Braintree street market, which is held in the town centre, is returning for a string of dates, starting on March 30.

Olivia Washington, who runs Olivia’s Curiosities, claims there was speculation among traders that market would not return this year, but is delighted it is happening.

Olivia said: “We initially thought, if they can cancel the Christmas switch-on so easily, then the rest of the street market could also be in trouble.

“There was speculation between us street traders, especially as we got the market dates ten days later than last year. During that period we feared the worst.

“We all support each other. Just having residents come to the street market, show support, show us they still need us, is so important.”

“This market does put a lot of bread and butter on the tables of the traders here. It is so relieving to have those dates.”

Olivia owns an online Etsy store which sells goods such as unique fabrics, haberdashery, and handmade skulls.

Olivia’s Curiosities heavily relies on opportunities such as the Braintree street market as it allows the online shop owner to meet customers face to face.

After March 30, this year’s market dates are April 27, May 18, June 29, July 27, August 31, September 28, October 26, November 30, and December 14.

Stalls are located in Great Square, High Street, New Street and Bank Street.

Since its launch in 2018, the market has offered street food, drinks, craft goods, local produce, homewares, trinkets and more from 30 vendors.

Braintree Council economic growth boss Frankie Ricci said: “I know many of our residents will be pleased our monthly street markets are making a return for 2024.

“Our street markets can be a great opportunity to launch or trial a business idea, so we’d really encourage any budding young entrepreneurs to get in touch with us for advice and support.”
