A resident has voiced concerns over the safety of his neighbourhood after an alleged arson attack in Witham. 

On October 9 at around 11pm, residents of Mann Close called emergency services after spotting a fire at a neighbouring property. 

The resident, who asked to stay anonymous, said: “There has been a series of fires.

"The first two times were bins but this time it was part of the building the communal bin and storage area. 

“Residents in Mann Close lost their property and had it damaged. There were a couple of prams which were destroyed by the fire.

“The fire was bad and really dangerous.” 

After calling emergency services, the resident and their partner contacted the housing organisation and were interviewed by an officer.

The couple expected to give their account to the police too, as according to them, a neighbour allegedly caused the incident. 

An Essex Police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into a fire which took place in Mann Close, Witham, shortly after 11.30pm on October 9.

“The 27-year-old was questioned on suspicion of arson not endangering life and was released on bail whilst our enquiries continue.”
