VETERAN councillor Graham Butland has said he is “honoured” to continue on as Braintree Council leader after he was once again elected for the role.

Mr Butland was re-elected as leader at an annual general meeting last week with councillor Tom Cunningham named deputy leader.

The meeting and appointments come after the local elections which saw the Conservatives just cling on to power in the district after only just securing the majority needed to control the council.

The party secured 26 seats following the vote, with 25 needed to secure an outright majority.

The Conservatives lost six seats overall in the elections.

After his re-appointment, Mr Butland said he anticipates a tough few years ahead but is honoured to serve as council leader once again.

He said: “It truly is an honour to serve this wonderful district as leader of the council.

"The next four years will be very challenging for local government but we’ll continue to do our very best for communities, delivering council services people want and need and driving forward our commitments to benefit our residents, businesses and the district as a whole.”

Following the announcement, there were also cabinet changes made by Mr Butland.

Mr Cunningham was appointed as deputy leader and Cabinet member for transformation, the environment and customer services.

Kevin Bowers was appointed as Cabinet member for resources and performance.

Gabrielle Spray was appointed as Cabinet member for planning and infrastructure.

Frankie Ricci was appointed as Cabinet member for economic growth and inward investment.

Lynette Bowers-Flint was appointed as Cabinet Member for housing, health and wellbeing.

Mary Cunningham was appointed as Cabinet member for stronger communities.
