A LEISURE centre is set to host self-defence courses for women as part of an ongoing 'Safer Streets' programme.

Fusion Lifestyle will be offering the classes at Witham Leisure Centre to help women and girls become more confident and aware of their surroundings.

The free classes will take place from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesdays and from 7.45pm to 8.45pm on Thursdays, starting on April 19.

The 12-week course is available to book on the Fusion app on a weekly basis up to 21 days in advance, with a maximum of 12 people per class.

Once the course has completed it will run again, giving more women the chance to participate.

The course will be tailored by the instructor each week to suit attendees, so new attendees are welcome to join at any time.

The free course is being funded by Safer Streets cash secured by Braintree Council, in partnership with the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Office for Essex.

The Safer Streets programme focuses on key areas in Witham and has a primary focus on reducing violence against women and girls, neighbourhood crime and anti-social behaviour.

Fusion Lifestyle's Catherine Forsyth said: “We are delighted to be bringing these self-defence classes to Witham.

“It’s a privilege to know we will be helping to give women and girls the tools to feel confident and safe, and we are looking forward to getting started.”
