A COUNCILLOR has welcomed investment into boosting broadband internet for nearly 2,000 homes.

Work is currently taking place in Silver End to connect more than 1,700 homes and businesses to ultrafast broadband.

Gigaclear’s full-fibre upgrade is bringing speeds of up to 900Mbps, which would enable homeowners to download a film in its entirety in just four seconds.

Silver End councillor Ross Playle says the broadband investment “is welcome” in the area.

He said: “It’s great to hear that Gigaclear is investing in the broadband infrastructure in Silver End.

“This will deliver full fibre, faster internet speeds to homes across the village at a time when we are increasingly dependent on good, reliable internet access.

“From paying council tax to checking the footie scores, the internet is part of everyday life and so it is welcome that Gigaclear is making this investment into our community.”

Gigaclear general manager Tony Smith added: “Having access to reliable and fast broadband speeds is no longer a luxury but is necessary in order for many people to live their lives fully, whether it’s working from home, streaming or accessing other online entertainment.

"Where possible we are utilising existing Openreach ducts and poles in order to minimise disruption in Silver End during the build phase and we hope to have the first residents connected to our network by spring 2023.

“This is undoubtedly going to be a game-changer for the village.”
