TWO adults have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and drug-related offences.

Police were called to the front of Tesco in Witham following reports of people collecting money for charity which did not appear to be genuine.

Officers attended the scene and spoke with an adult male and an adult female who were collecting money for a charity.

Checks carried out at the scene were unable to provide reasonable connections between the collectors and the charity, and there was information suggesting the activity may be fraudulent.

Two adults were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation and drug related offences.

Two cash collection buckets, expired IDs, leaflets and other items have been seized in relation to this investigation.

The two suspects remain in police custody for questioning.

A police spokesman said: “A number of members of the public saw this arrest and asked why it is illegal to collect money.

“We would like to offer reassurance to the public that arrests were not made simply due to money being collected but due to the suspected fraudulent connection to this specific collection.”
