A HUGE amount of people risk being scammed as stats show trends in scamming cases in the area.

A study has found that 80 per cent of people living in the district have been targeted by a scam and 58 per cent of the public have received deliveries, portal and courier service scams.

Some of the other most common scams claim to be from the Government or HMRC, investment or financial schemes, rebates and refunds, and banking scams.

Citizens Advice Maldon and District is urging people to be on their guard against potential scams if they suspect they are not dealing with a real company or genuine person, or if they are pressured to transfer money quickly or in an unusual way.

Lucy Bettley, chief officer of Citizens Advice Maldon and District, said: “A shocking number of people in the Maldon area have been targeted by a scammer so far this year.

“We know scammers prey on our worries and fears. Sadly the cost-of-living crisis is no exception.

“Anyone can be targeted by a scam, and as the purse strings are tightened and financial pressures pile on, it’s important we work together to protect ourselves and each other.”
