When it comes to lottery a lot of us sometimes feel like the day, we hit the jackpot is only ever going to happen in our dreams.  It doesn’t help when the media starts spreading false information regarding lotteries.

So, it makes sense that when the media helped spread misinformation that the Irish Lotto €19 million jackpot was unwinnable people became very sceptical.

In this article we are going to delve into the Irish Lotto and explain what really went on if you are not aware.

The “unwinnable Irish lotto”

Earlier this year comments in the media allowed the spread of misinformation that the 19 million jackpot was unwinnable before a must-win draw for the prize was held in January 2022.

The Lotto jackpot rolled over for a record number of 7 consecutive months. It started in June 2021, and someone finally won the jackpot on January 17 this year. The prize was finally won after a ‘must-be-won’ drawn was held.

The jackpot had been capped at 19 million in October under Lotto rules, and extra funds were allocated to lower-tier prizes to make up for money not added to the top prize.

Before the 17 January draw, the National Lottery obtained permission from the regulator to allow the full jackpot prize to flow down to the winner of the next winning prize tier – matching five balls plus the bonus number- if six numbers were not matched, and to the tier below that again if still nobody had won.

The seemingly unwinnable jackpot faced criticism from the public and politicians, leading to bosses introducing the ‘must win’ aspect. It followed weeks of criticism about how long it was taking the jackpot to be won.

The introduction of the new rules in January means that jackpot prizes will in future remain capped for a maximum for five draws. If there is not outright jackpot winner on the fifth draw, the entire jackpot fund will flow down to the next winning prize tier.

Why is the Irish Lotto actually the better bet?

Despite the negative criticisms about the Irish Lotto, it is actually positioned amongst the top lotteries with the best jackpot odds along with a substantial jackpot prize of £10 million. The Irish Lotto is a great all-round lottery and one of the most popular with UK customers at Lottoland.

Those who play the Irish Lotto have better odds of winning compared to those playing the UK Lotto. For example, with the Irish jackpot, you have a 1 in 10.7 million chance of winning! However, the odds of winning the UK Lotto are 1 in 45.6 million!

The main draw offers a minimum jackpot of a minimum of £1.4M, with an additional £900,000 possible with the Plus 1 draw and a further £225,000 on the Plus 2 draw. This means you have the chance to win 3 jackpots for just £3! A bargain If you ask me!

Lottoland’s biggest British winner to date was Mr Logan, who won the famous Irish Lotto bagging him-self €5.6 million by betting on this always-popular lotto.

Lottoland’s army of Irish Lottolanders is growing bigger day by day, and recently broke the Irish Lottoland record when a Lottolander from Cork won the sum of over €220,000 from a bet on EuroMillions.
