A FATHER is braving the trek across four of the highest peaks in the British Isles to raise money for a charity supporting his son.

Adam Fitzgerald, formerly of Sible Hedingham, 35 will be traversing Carrauntoohil, Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis in the space of four days.

His son Callum, six, is a student at St Margaret’s Primary in Toppesfield, and has what is believed to be NF1, a genetic condition that causes tumours to grow along the nerves.

He is raising money for the Childhood Tumour Trust, which is supporting Callum.

Adam’s wife, Selina, 37, said: “We saw the signs, and Callum had some of the common symptoms, so it is an expected diagnosis.”

Adam is making the climb with fellow London Underground workers.

He, along with Jamie Younie, Ed Febbraio, and other supporters, are taking on the challenge, across four days, raising money for four separate chosen charities.

The charities were picked by Jamie, Ed and another friend, Dan Rogers, who is caring for his wife so cannot take part.

They are raising money for Saint Francis Hospice, Sands and the DVH Cancer Fighting Fund.

The four peaks being climbed are Carrauntoohil in the Republic of Ireland, Snowdon in Wales, Scafell Pike in England and Ben Nevis in Scotland.

It is a total elevation of 4,446 metres, with 34 miles being trekked.

The challenge first came about when fellow colleague Andy Cooper, wanted to do something to help.

Selina said: “Andy is the co-ordinator and hated seeing his colleagues and friends being affected by these troubles, so they collectively decided to do something about it.

“We first started planning it when we lived in Sible recently, raising money for charities that are close to them.

“They decided that three peaks were boring, so went one better with four.”

Adam has already begun training, and has a planned climb in February in the Peak District.

Selina said: “He doesn’t really walk much.

“We are going on plenty of walks with the kids and the dog, but that is only an elevation of around 50m.

“But it is a great cause, and I am proud of them all.”
