The damage was reported to officers with Essex Police on November 18.
It is believed the event took place in the week prior to the report, which would mean it was just days before or after Remembrance Day.
It is not the first time the mural has been desecrated.
The mural, which has been painted along the River Walk in Witham, was marked with a rude symbol last year too.
It was believed to have happened on the same weekend which saw other famous memorials, such as the Cenotaph in London, covered up following civil unrest in June.
Now, the graffitied symbols have returned, which Essex Police now appealing for anyone with information to come forwards.
A spokesperson for the Police has said: “If you have any information, you can submit a report online at essex.police.uk or use the 'Live Chat' button to speak to an online operator between 7am-11pm.
“Please quote reference 42/267914/21.
“You can also call us on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
