WITHAM Cricket Club are celebrating after gaining promotion to the East Anglian Premier League.

A packed ground saw Witham beat Eaton Socon CC by 136 runs, in the play-off final.

Delighted Witham captain Jake Wakelin said: "Everybody in the club is so happy we have managed to get over the line and get promoted.

"We have played some really good cricket this year but have probably saved our best for when it mattered.

"The scenes as we took the last wicket were incredible.

"The celebrations went long into the night and there were lots of emotion from us players, members and supporters.

"It was such an amazing feeling to see what joy it brought to everybody involved in the club."

After losing a couple of wickets early, Cody McDonald went on to score a magnificent 100 which set an imposing total of 290.

Following a positive start, Eaton Socon lost wickets at regular intervals and were all out for 154, with Carl Bragg and Greg Stephens picking up four wickets each.

Wakelin added: "It has been amazing to captain these boys and we can't wait to test ourselves amongst the best teams in East Anglia next season.

"Next year is the club's 175th year and it will be special to be playing Premier League cricket for the occasion."
