COUNCIL bosses are appealing for volunteers as they prepare to relaunch an initiative to stop speeding drivers.

Halstead Town Council has said it is reforming its speedwatch scheme in a bid to reduce the number of speeding drivers in Halstead.

The scheme sees residents armed with equipment to catch speeding motorists and report them.

It is hoped the scheme will act as a deterrent and make drivers think twice before breaking the speed limit in the town.

The council has confirmed the four main roads leading into Halstead are the main concerns but that they have also received a number of complaints from residents regarding speeding in the town.

The scheme has also received the backing of Essex Police.

Now council bosses are seeking volunteers to take up the responsibility of catching speeding motorists.

A spokesman for Halstead Town Council said: "Following many complaints from residents regarding speeding in the town, Halsted Town Council has decided to restart its speedwatch scheme.

"There was a similar scheme a few years ago, so the council already has the equipment.

"It is now seeking volunteers willing to do a stint at the roadside.

"This has the backing of Essex Police and is seen as an effective way of reducing speeding.

"Please contact the town clerk (townclerk@halsteadtowncouncil.org.uk) for further information.”
