TV chef Jamie Oliver has applied for permission to modernise the servants' quarters of his £6million mansion.

The popular cook wants to restore the attic at his Tudor mansion, Spains Hall, in Finchingfield.

In addition to the 12 existing bedrooms, the 46-year-old has lodged plans with Braintree Council to extend the electrics, plumbing and heating to the second floor of his home to create more bedrooms.

Earlier the year he was also given the green light to renovate the mansion, despite opposition from archaeologists who said Spains Hall was of "archaeological and historical interest".

But a design statement accompanying the recent plans says the proposed works 'are not considered to detract from the character or special architectural interest' of the house.

The Grade I listed estate covers 70 acres and includes a great hall, games room, two drawing rooms and a wine cellar.

His latest show 'Keep Cooking: Family Favourites' on Channel 4 was mostly filmed at the house, giving viewers an insight.

In the application, Olivers agent Stephanie Gray of First Plan, states in the application: "Bedroom 9 is proposed to be repurposed as a bathroom, the small room over the front entrance is proposed to be used as a WC and the existing storage cupboard adjacent to Bedroom 7 is proposed to become an ensuite for Bedroom 7.

"The proposed works are minor in scale and nature and will not change the overall form, layout or access arrangements of Spains Hall.

"The works will have a beneficial impact in terms of ensuring necessary repairs are undertaken to leaking skylights.

"Extending heating, plumbing and services fully to the second floor will ensure this part of the house is equipped to deal with modern family life.

"The internal windows within the partition walls will improve the amount of natural light in these areas."

Jamie's other plans for the house, which have already been approved by the council, include a terrace, a new access driveway and the construction of new gates at the end of the 250-metre driveway.

Jamie and his wife Jools brought the home at the start of 2019 with their five kids, Poppy, Daisy, Petal, Buddy, and River.

The home is just 17 miles from his parent's pub, The Cricketers in Clavering.
