If I understand W Brown (Letters, May 27) correctly, if patients arrive at A&E with self-inflicted wounds, they should be left to die, so that the doctors can say to them, ‘Serves you right!’

W Brown’s verbose and ill-informed comments fail to acknowledge that the UK is seriously ill as a result of having left the EU.

Thousands of well-paid jobs have already moved from the UK to the capital cities of mainland Europe.

There are numerous job vacancies in Witham and elsewhere, especially in retail and hospitality, which remain unfilled because huge numbers of EU citizens who worked here have been deterred from doing so and have emigrated.

Businesses up and down the country who trade with the EU are confronted now with mountains of red tape, and plenty of them have given up trading with the EU altogether, thereby taking losses to their balance sheet.

The Northern Ireland protocol, willingly signed up to by Boris Johnson, is a source of friction and unrest which I pray will not lead to violence.

W Brown may be in a position to be complacent about all this, but I am not.

The Government has it in its power to act now, by consenting to the country immediately rejoining the EU Single Market and Customs Union.

That would take the initial pressure off, and allow the patient to recover a little.
If the Government does not do this, we can expect the UK to take a serious turn for the worse.
