Nearly two-thirds of people in Braintree have had their first dose of a Covid vaccine, figures reveal.

The latest available data from the NHS, which only takes into consideration jabs given out up until April 11, shows 64 per cent of people aged 16 and over in the district have received their vaccinations.

A total of 78,925 people have received their jab in the district.

Of those vaccinated, 59,936 were aged 50 and over – 96 per cent of the age group.

It means 18,989 people aged between 16 to 49 have received a first dose of the vaccine.

This comes as shops, gyms, hairdressers and pubs and restaurants were allowed to reopen for the first time in four months last week.

Businesses in Braintree welcomed customers back on April 12.
