BRAINTREE Council has joined the flood of tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Council chairman Angela Kilmartin said: “Braintree District Council receives with great sadness, the news of the death of HRH the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"Prince Philip was known for his devotion to duty, his steadfast support for the Queen and a continuous life of service to this country.

"Braintree District Council, its officers, staff and council members join with the rest of the nation in expressing our very great sadness at his death. Prince Philip will be sorely missed.”

Flags on the council's buildings are being flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.

A letter of condolence will be sent from the chairman of the council to the Queen’s personal secretary, expressing sympathies on behalf of the council and residents of the Braintree district.
