AN on-call firefighter will run 12km in memory of his grandfather
Matthew Stalley, 32, will be running from his home in Great Leighs to Braintree Crematorium this Saturday to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.
The challenge is being held one year on from the death of Matthew’s grandfather, Derek Green, who died, aged 79.
Matthew, whose grandfather worked at Thaxted fire station for 25 years, said: “My grandfather was always busy, either at the chemical plant where he worked, playing sport or at the fire station where he loved being with his team.
“My two memories of my grandad’s involvement in the fire service are when he brought the fire engine to the village fair and I got to sit in it, and when he got a medal for long service.”
Matthew is running in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity after it suffered a a big drop in revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The charity says a drop in fundraising events and charity shop sales have left it with a shortfall of about £200,000 a month.
Matthew’s preparations for this weekend’s run have been hampered by an injury to his foot which was caused by treading on a nail.
Despite needing a trip to A&E, he says he is confident he will be fit enough to complete his challenge.
