A POLICE chief appealed to drink and drug drivers to “listen to their conscience” before getting behind the wheel.

Sussex Police said 83 arrests were made during the annual crackdown between June and July. The force said last year there were 289 crashes involving drink or drug drivers, with 70 of those incidents leading to serious injuries, four proving fatal.

Roads Policing Unit Chief Inspector Michael Hodder said: “It’s really disappointing that some people still choose to risk the lives of themselves and others by driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. These irresponsible individuals increase the chances of serious injury or fatal collisions occurring.

“While it is our duty to respond to emergency situations, it goes without saying that such incidents could be easily avoided if people listen to our advice, listen to their conscience, and make the right decision.” If you’re going to be consuming drink, then make sure you plan ahead.”
