HOMEOWNERS across Brighton are raking in cash by renting out their empty driveways to seaside visitors.

Seaside resorts across the country has seen a huge surge in residents renting out their driveways to people – with the city’s figure rising a whopping 340 per cent in the past month.

Southend's figure is the biggest English coastal town rise, with a rise of 370 per cent, according to data from website Your Parking Space.

Those renting their driveways in Brighton are making on average £162 profit per month.

The figures have been rising as the UK is eased out of lockdown as the Covid-19 pandemic continues.

The Argus:

Other seaside hotspots, including Bournemouth, Blackpool, Margate and Great Yarmouth, have witnessed rented driveway bookings rocket by at least 220 per cent, sometimes considerably more.

Worthing also makes the list, with a 280 per cent increase. People there can make up to £78 a month renting their driveways.

And in Hastings, people are making £48.

Harrison Woods, managing director at Your Parking Space, said people were finding new ways to earn additional income, and said demand is expected to rise further over August.

He said: “We’re seeing a massive increase in rented driveway bookings in seaside towns as Brits return to the coast following a relaxation in lockdown rules.

“Our research shows that Brighton has enjoyed a massive increase in rented driveway bookings post-lockdown.

“I would expect demand here to only increase in August throughout the summer holidays, and at other seaside resorts, with many people preferring a staycation.

“It is a good opportunity for visitors to possibly save on parking charges, as driveways can be cheaper than traditional car parks while also providing more social distancing room for the vehicle’s occupants.”
