PILES of filth and rubbish have begun building up at a popular Southampton beauty spot.

The bins at Southampton Common have begun to overflow with rubbish during lockdown, as the hot weather draws more and more people into the city’s green spaces.

Crates of glass bottles, left over food and bags of dog waste have piles up at various places around the Common.

Due to the hot weather, the piles of filth have began to swelter and now emit an foul smell.

Residents are now calling for action to be taken and are asking Southampton City Council to do something about the problem.

Resident shave expressed their concerns for the wildlife that live in the park, stating that animals will “pick apart” the bin bags and spread the litter across the grass.

They described the bin as “inadequate” and described the scene as “disgusting and revolting”.

One resident of Southampton, and frequent visitor at the park, said that the bins at Southampton Common “overflow during this time of year”.

He added: “This is due to the inadequacy and purpose of the bins.

“It’s disgusting and revolting to see the scenes during my morning walk.

“Not only that, the wildlife pick apart the bins and spread the litter everywhere.

“I have written to the council and my MP about this multiple times.

“These bins need to be replaced with much bigger industrialised sized bins with coverings to stop birds picking at them.

“This is also dangerous for dogs, if they start to eat and pick at the left overs and whatever else is in those

bins.”

Councillor Dave Shields, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said: “Littering across the city is an ongoing issue and as part of our commitment to reducing the amount of rubbish left on our streets and green spaces, we are due to install larger bins at the entrances to the Common.

“Unfortunately delivery has been delayed as a result of restrictions placed on manufacturers.

“As lockdown starts to lift, our anti-littering campaign is targeting the small minority of people who do not dispose of their rubbish

properly. “
