RESIDENTS have been left "annoyed and angry" after years of flooding and constant water damage costing thousands have made their lives a misery.

Mother-of-two Michelle Powell has expressed her frustration as her street, Wallace Road in Weston, flooded for the sixth time in two years last week.

Due to heavy rainfall on June 18, the road flooded causing water levels to rise to knee height.

The family were celebrating their youngest daughters 15th birthday when the rain hit.

To make matters worse, the water was potentially "live" due to maintenance work on power cables in the road.

Workmen in the area advised that everyone kept out of the water.

Michelle said that no matter how many times she contacts Southampton City Council and Souther Water "nothing gets done".

Now, she is looking for someone to "take responsibility".

The 41-year-old added: "This is the sixth time in a couple of years, and no one is accepting the blame.

"[Flooding] once caused £15,000 worth of damage to my home. The water rose as high as my husbands chest.

"We have had to have floors and carpets all ripped up. It floods the cars. Every time it rains it's like a swimming pool.

"This time there was no damage to our house, but my neighbour's house had flooded."

Michelle explained how each year her insurance policy becomes more and more expensive due to the constant claims for water damage.

Souther Water has claimed that the responsibility lies with Southampton City Council.

A spokesperson said: "We’re sorry residents in Wallace Road, SO19 have been affected by flooding.

"Our inspector has investigated and found that this is ground water and not a problem with our network.

" Instead it seems the surface water drains become overwhelmed in heavy rain. Surface water drains in this area are the responsibility of the council."

However, the council have claimed that they have received no reports of flooding issues in Wallace Road.

A spokesperson said that Flood Risk Management "has not been made aware of any specific ongoing flooding issues at Wallace Road, and has no details on where any recent flood issues relate to".

They continued that the last report of flooding in the area was in 2018.

They added: "Southampton experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall with a number of flood reports received within the Woolston and Weston areas of the city.

"This rainfall was falling on very dry ground, which increases the rate of runoff, adding pressure to underground drainage systems that can become overwhelmed if design capacity is exceeded.

"Without understanding the case - we have not received any recent reports of flooding for the Wallace Road area - in further detail it is not possible for Flood Risk Management to establish the cause of flooding, or who the responsibility may fall to as responsibility for drainage is often split between the Council, Southern Water and the land/property owner."
