OUR MP James Cleverly got a standing ovation when he opened a new cafe in Braintree High Street on Saturday.

At the same time, the shoe shop next door was displaying a closing down notice in its window.

Why do us local people need a new cafe when we can have a cup of coffee and a snack before we do our shopping and, if necessary the same again when we return.

Many people shop online now, but some have no access to a computer or the ability to use one, especially the older generation.

We are fortunate that the Braintree Village shopping outlet is on our doorstep and we can buy items there that are not available in the town.

The redevelopment work in Manor Street and the possible pedestrianisation of the High Street can't come quick enough as it might be our last chance to halt the decline in and around our town.

Can I suggest Mr Cleverly wakes up before he smells the coffee.
