A NEW war memorial will be unveiled during a special ceremony.

The stone monument will be set up at the Maurice Rowson Hall in Gosfield after more than £12,000 was raised by villagers throughout the year.

A committee of volunteers was set up to raise cash for the project after the old wooden memorial was considered to be in a poor state of repair and needed replacing.

Plans are in place to renovate it and move it inside the hall.

Cash has been raised for the new memorial through a variety of fundraising events, grants and a poppy sale.

Volunteer Isla Gill said: "The new memorial will stand on the spot of the previous and has been designed to reflect the original.

There was a desire for our generation to reflect on our gratitude for peace as well as appropriately marking the sacrifice made by those connected with Gosfield, we believe that this new memorial will reflect this."

The memorial will be unveiled during a dedication service which begins at St Catherine's Church and then moves onto the Maurice Rowson Hall.

The ceremony takes place on Saturday, November 2 and gets underway from 2pm.
