The Lib Dems have set up a petition to fight against plans to withdraw a key bus service in Witham.

Essex County Council has launched a consultation over proposals to withdraw funding for the number 39 bus, which is run by Stephensons of Essex.

The service runs in a loop from the station and stops along the likes of Flora Road and Chipping Hill.

County Hall says it is seeking to cut funding for the route because of a lack of users.

However, the Braintree and Witham Lib Dems are looking to fight the plans and have launched a petition calling for the service to be retained.

In a statement posted alongside the document online, the party states: "Bus route 39 is one of two services that effect Witham’s town centre and following last years Route 72 cancellation will leave residents with even fewer options.

"There are many people who depend on local buses for mobility and transport and their needs are being completely ignored once more"

"The time is right for people to stand up and say enough is enough as, if we do not, this worrying trend may be set to continue leaving Witham increasingly isolated and furthermore, those who rely on local buses also being left behind."
