It’s officially the Christmas Season as Braintree Light Switch on is announced.

The annual event will take over the town centre for the day on Saturday November 16.

Over 100 street market stalls will spread out across the town including Sandpit Lane, New Street, Market Street and George Yard Shopping Centre.

The lights will be switched on in Market Place outside Tesco’s at 5.30pm.

Radio Essex will be hosting festive entertainment from midday with live music, dancer performances and carol singers.

George Yard Shopping Centre will also light up with their switch at 5pm followed by a Santa parade before the celebrations at Market Place.

The popular street market will also be making a return across the town with the biggest one yet.

Visitors will be able to pick up festive gifts and goodies from handmade jewellery, decorations, wreaths and hampers.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “Our Christmas light switch on is always a great community event and marks the start of Christmas in Braintree.

“We have a fantastic mix of local entertainment and activities this year and it’s the perfect time for visitors to start their shopping and pick up some special festive gifts.

“The atmosphere is going to be terrific, so we hope to see lots of people in the town centre and join in on the festive celebrations with us, you don’t want to miss out.”

Face-painting, a children’s rise and a street team will be there providing extra fun for those who want to make the most of the day.

There will also be several events over the day across the town.

Including free children’s crafts market at Braintree Museum, a 1920’s pop up bar and an indoor craft market at the Town Hall and the chance to meet Father Christmas in George Yard.

Festivities at the Fountain End of the High Street will run from 1-6pm with local performers of all genres.

Their lights will switch on at 5.45pm
