A NEW case of the deadly strep A infection has been reported in Mid Essex.
Health bosses say they have been informed of a new probable case of invasive group A streptococcus which has so far affected 24 people and killed a further 13 since February.
The Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group says it is awaiting test results before it can confirm the latest case.
Many people affected by the infection are said to be older people living in the Braintree district who have been receiving community care for chronic wounds.
The infection has also affected small numbers of patients in Maldon, Chelmsford and West Essex.
Health bosses insist the chances of contracting the infection are low and it is treatable with antibiotics.
Anyone with concerns is asked to contact the freephone helpline on 03000 032124.
