A 30 metre tower could be put up in Braintree.
Mobile network operators EE and H3G are seeking planning permission to put a new mast up on the Braintree College site in Church Lane.
The two firms are set to see their existing tower on the site taken down as part of a redevelopment at the college, which will a new STEM centre built for students.
EE and H3G say they have identified another site on the campus to build the new tower, which will be surrounded by a security fence.
The tower will support six antennas and four dishes.
In their application, the two network operators say the tower will not only continue connectivity coverage, but may also improve it.
The firms say the tower would be based as far away from nearby houses as possible.
