A 19-year-old hairdresser behind a 1950s-style barbershop says she is excited to be moving to a bigger and better shop just nine months after starting her business.

India Tate opened the Groom Room, in Bridge Street, Coggeshall, last September.

But the shop’s popularity means she is already making the next step ... to another shop around the corner in Market End.

India, who has lived in the town all her life, said: “It was my dream to have my own shop and the fact I’m moving into bigger premises just makes it worthwhile – my dream has come true.

“I didn’t think I’d be moving so soon but the shop is now too small for the amount of people I get in.

“You know you need bigger premises when people are waiting outside because there is no room.

“The new shop has so much history and it’s right in front of the T-junction so it makes sense to move somewhere in a better place.”

“The past nine months have been amazing. It’s been really busy to the fact I’ve had to hire a girl called Charli to work with me on Thursday and Saturdays and I get people coming from all over Essex for a specialised rockabilly cut.”

Before setting up her own business, the former Honywood School pupil had been working in another hair salon in the town for four years, while she took hairdressing courses.

The influence of her father meant she wanted to open a barbershop with has a focus on the 1950s style and she says it has gone down well with punters.

India said: “Loads of people love the 50s style as it’s different to other barber shops around.

“Older gents like it because that’s what they were use to back in the day, especially when the rockabilly music is playing.

“My ambition now is to make the barbershop the best one around and maybe even open up some other shops in future in different areas.”

The new shop in Market End was previously used as butchers and, more recently, as offices.

The Groom Room will open there on Tuesday, June 4.
