A GOSFIELD-based artist is showcasing a unique exhibition dedicated to traction engines.

7 Galleries, by Georgie Roy, includes the main exhibition Welcome to My World of the Steam Rallies, compiled entirely of art based on traction engines at the Minories Gallery in Colchester.

Georgie’s involvement with traction engines started in the Sixties when she read in her local paper that Cressing Church was hosting a fete and a traction engine would be there.

She developed a love for drawing the engines in the early Nineties and when she learned of the forthcoming sale of the Philp Collection of Traction Engines at Castle Hedingham in 1995 she spent two and a half weeks drawing as many engines as possible before the auction.

She said: “All the acrylic and oil paintings were started on site but once the engine moves to go into the parade ring, have a ride round, or to get water, it doesn’t get back into exactly the same position so most have been finished at home from photographs within the last 12 months.”

The Minories offered Georgie the whole building for 7 Galleries.

As well as her paintings of traction engines there are six other galleries displaying Georgie’s work.

The exhibition is open every day between 10am and 5pm over Easter.
