A man caught carrying drugs and a kitchen knife in public has avoided immediate jail time.

Charles Varnals, of Market Lane, Witham, admitted to two offences when appearing at Colchester Magistrates' Court last Thursday.

Varnals, 20, was found carrying a quantity of cannabis by police in Colchester on Wednesday.

Officers also discovered he was in possession of a 14ins kitchen knife when he was stopped in Station Road, Hythe.

During a court hearing, magistrates handed Varnals a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also directed to pay £200 in costs, including a victim surcharge of £115.

The cannabis found will be destroyed by police.
