PRIMARY pupils donned their silliest hats for a day and helped raise hundreds of pounds for young carers.

Students at Howbridge Junior in Witham took part in National Young Carers Day by wearing a hat to school last Thursday.

The children arrived at the gates in their headgear and spent the day learning about young people who are relied upon to support a loved one.

The initiative saw the school raise an estimated £200 for the Young Carers Charity.

Organiser Belina Alger, who is the patoral support worker and counsellor at the school, said, "Through work we do at school, we know we have several young carers here at Howbridge.

"We felt it was important to raise awareness of young carers. I am so happy that the day was well supported by everyone."
