A man has been jailed after he was caught burgling a shop in Braintree.

Michael Tucker, 35, of no fixed abode, has been ordered to serve 26 weeks behind bars after he admitted burgling A1 Braintree in Rayne Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

Tucker had been attempting to steal a display bike worth thousands of pounds from the shop. He had used a brick to smash the front windows of the store in order to get inside.

Officers arrested the crook at the scene after they arrived to find him inside the shop trying to free the bike, which was anchored to the ground.

Tucker was charged with burglary and admitted the offence when appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates Court yesterday.

Along with serving jail time, he will also have to pay £500 in compensation.
