ONE thug has been jailed and another has been handed a suspended sentence after a brutal attack on a man outside a kebab shop.

Daniel Stephens, 22, and Billie Todd, 18, have been sentenced after admitting to the charges against them following the assault in June.

Their victim, a man in his 20s, had been in a fast food shop on Newland Street, Witham, when Stephens approached him and began acting aggressively.

Stephens then left the shop and waited outside for the victim who was assaulted as he left the shop.

He was punched several times and, while he was on the ground, Todd joined in and kicked him in the face twice. Both of them left the scene when police officers arrived.

Stephens, of Calamint Road, Witham, was given a 14 month prison sentence for causing actual bodily harm at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Meanwhile Todd, of Cressing Road, Witham, was given a 20 month prison sentence suspended for two years and must also do 200 hours of unpaid work.

The assault took place at around 1.15am on Saturday, June 16.

Police soon named the pair as being wanted in connection with the attack and Todd was found within two days while Stephens handed himself in.

Detective Constable Greg Najdan, from Braintree CID, said: “This was a horrific and senseless attack and I would like to praise the victim and their family for their strength during this difficult time.

“I’m glad that Stephens and Todd had the decency to plead guilty to save them the anguish of a trial.

“Stephens and Todd took it upon themselves to continuously attack the victim, who had done nothing to either of them, and was just trying to walk away from the situation.”
