The search to find the worst 20 potholes which need fixing in the district is underway.

Halstead county councillor Joanne Beavis has confirmed she has already identified a number of roads in the town which will be patched up in the coming months.

Essex County Council has announced it will be spending £2.4 million on fixing 1,500 potholes in the county. Each councillor will be asked to list 20 of the worst offending defects in their area which need fixing.

Ms Beavis says she has been speaking to people in the town about which potholes need urgent attention and she revealed some of the roads which are in line to be fixed during a town council meeting on Monday.

She said: "What I have tried to do is to go around and find out what the worst potholes are.

"The area which has really come to my attention is by Riverside Court, down by Rosemary Lane. There is quite a collection there so that bit is definitely in my top ten.

"I have visited residents at the top end of Oak Road where there is quite a few potholes on the road. We are looking at using jetwork there which will be a much more substantial filling."

Ms Beavis also identified the road outside Riverside Fish and Chips shop in High Street as one likely to be patched up.

Drivers received a further boost this week after the Department for Transport announced more funding for fixing roads through the winter.

An extra £10,894,000 has been set aside for Essex, with the money also being spent on investing in small safety, bus priority or walking and cycling schemes.

Roads Minister Jesse Noman said: “Potholes are a huge problem for all road users, and too often we see issues occurring at the same place time after time.

“That is why the Government is investing more in improving our roads than at any time before - £15 billion between 2015 and 2020 and a further £28.8 billion to 2025.

"Plus an immediate extra £420 million for potholes and local road maintenance just this year."
