MORE than 3,000 poppies have been crocheted, knitted and sewed by villagers of all ages for a special First World War display.

And pupils at St Peter's Primary School, in Coggeshall, helped to drape a netting of more than 1,000 poppies near the village's memorial.

Around five months of work went into making the display and others that are in St Peter’s Church and 30 volunteers helped attach them to two nets.

They will stay there for the next two weeks before they are moved to an indoor location.

Alison Cole, headteacher at St Peter’s, said: "As a school all of the children are learning about World War One and the significance of the poppies in our whole school history week.

"Being included in making and displaying the poppies helped the children to realise the importance of this centenary event within the Coggeshall community."

The displays have also drawn an incredible amount of supportive comments from all generations and backgrounds within the village.

Ian Henderson, a resident, said: "I was taken aback with the poppies on the wall near the park plus in the churchyard, it looks amazing - to all those people who did it, well done."

The Parish Council have also arranged for the war memorial to be professionally cleaned.

The service for Remembrance Sunday begins in St Peters Church at 10.45 am before an act of Remembrance with the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial in the recreation ground.
