AN adaptation of a Michael Morpurgo novel has been chosen by a dramatic club for their latest production.

The Witham Dramatic Club will perform Simon Reade's version of Private Peaceful at the town's public hall later this month.

The timely production will tell the tale of Private Thomas ‘Tommo’ Peaceful who lie about his age in order to be allowed to join the army and fight for King and Country.

Unfortunately things don't go well for him and the death and destruction he's exposed to affect him and his brother, Charlie, badly.

As he sits in a prison cell in Flanders he recalls his short life; growing up in rural Devon, his childhood friends, his family and Molly, the love of his life.

He also remembers his more recent experiences at the front where men and, in some cases, boys, are called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Alongside his brother Charlie he witnesses the true carnage inflicted on a generation.

This moving story is a warm and sometimes surprisingly humorous tribute to all those who faced the ordeal of bloodiest war in history.

In particular to those who couldn’t cope with the horror they witnessed every day in an age when mental trauma was not acknowledged in the way that physical injuries were.

It will take place at the public hall from Wednesday, November 21 to Saturday, November 24 and tickets cost £12.50.

To buy visit the town hall or the dramatic club website at www.withamdramatic.co.uk or by phone on 0345 017 8717.

There is a reduced price of £10.50 on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 for those aged over 60 or under 16.
