As we near the start of the new school year for Braintree pupils, we should reflect on the role of education for young people everywhere.

Education is the ladder which helps people climb out of poverty, yet millions of children in the world’s poorest countries miss out on this important opportunity.

The UK has led the international work to ensure children get the chance to learn and help their communities prosper.

In just three years, more than 11 million children in the world’s poorest countries are now getting a quality education because of our country’s generosity.

This movement has been made possible by members of the public around the UK who believe we can end extreme poverty, including the 500 members of the One Campaign, an anti-poverty organisation, from Braintree.

I am proud that the UK, supported by millions of campaigners, are leading the effort for a fairer, safer world for us all.

This is as important globally as it is here in Braintree, as shown by the hundreds of people who add their voice to this cause.
