BRAINTREE'S MP says he wants to see police officers take action against travellers 'more rapidly and consistently' after a summer of problems.

In a Facebook post, James Cleverly said he has received several calls and emails from residents about unauthorised encampments appearing across his constituency.

In Braintree, travellers have caused issues on Notley Green, in Great Notley, and on the Springwood Industrial Estate among other areas.

Mr Cleverly's post read: 'While not uncommon to see a rise during the summer months, these encampments cause considerable concern and distress to local residents.

'I am grateful to constituents who alert me about traveller encampments, it allows me and my team to keep track of developments, liaise with both Braintree District Council and the police, and provides examples of the impact on local people. 'This is invaluable when making the argument for policy change in this area.'

In April, the government announced it was going to hold a review of the law around dealing with illegal traveller sites.

And Mr Cleverly said he has had several meetings with James Brokenshire, the secretary of state for housing, communities and local government about the issue.

His post continued: 'Given recent events in Great Notley, I want to make sure police enforce Section 61 more rapidly and consistently; particularly when reports of trespass by way of damage to locks and vandalism are reported.

'The police should also take reports of intimidating or threatening behaviour seriously.

'The nature of the policing response was a point I raised with Roger Hirst, the Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, and will raise when I meet the new Chief Constable.'

The consultation came to an end in June and Mr Cleverly said he will share details on Facebook once the feedback is assessed.
