A new roundabout on the main road between Braintree and Witham could be built to provide access to a new 250 home estate.

Williams Group, the owners of Braintree Retail Park, are behind the plans, which will see the homes built on land between Braintree Road and Long Green, Cressing

The developer, which has owned the retail park since 2003, has now submitted an outline application for the plans - and wants to install a mini roundabout in Braintree Road.

A planning statement reads: “The proposed development offers the opportunity to deliver new market and affordable housing, high quality open space and landscaping as well as biodiversity benefits to help the planning authority in meeting its housing requirements in a sustainable manner.

“The benefits of the proposed development, in particular in terms of housing delivery should be given very significant weight.

“The proposal would represent a logical extension of the existing town of Braintree in a sustainable location, without significant harm to the landscape, the capacity of the local highways network, or any other technical matter.”

The development will be made up of a mix of one to five bed properties, including affordable homes and bungalows.

A second entrance point will also be added via another roundabout at Long Green.

Before submitting the application, Williams Group held a public exhibition to showcase its proposals to residents.

An engagement report states: “All comments received have been reviewed by the project team and where possible amendments were made to the proposal.

“Feedback was also given at the exhibition and questions were answered.

“Many of the issues raised are covered in the application documents which accompany this response.”

New public open space and enhanced pedestrian and cycle routes also form part of the plans.

Braintree Council will have the final say later this year.
