Two new councillors have been elected following by-elections held in the district yesterday.

Anthony Everard won in Bocking North for Labour while James Coleridge won in Hatfield Peverel and Terling for the Conservatives.

Mr Everard edged out Conservative candidate Dean Wallace by 79 votes to claim his victory in a ward where he was also up against UKIP and Green candidates.

It marked a gain for Labour in a seat previously held by Stephanie Paul for the Conservatives before her resignation in March due to increased work commitments.

Meanwhile, over in Hatfield Peverel and Terling, Mr Coleridge took 965 votes to win over Green (293) and Labour (234) candidates.

Daryn Hufton-Rees had previously held the seat for the Conservatives before he resigned in February, again citing increased work commitments.

Turnout for the by-election in the Hatfield Peverel and Terling ward was 32.16 percent while in the Bocking North Ward it was 17.71 percent.
