Hundreds of prospective students attended an event to find out more about apprenticeships at Braintree's state-of-the-art Stem innovation centre.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, Colchester Institute's The College at Braintree, in Church Lane, opened its doors on Monday to around 1,300 year ten pupils from across the district.

Apprenticeship providers and employers were on hand to inform students of the benefits of studying an apprenticeship and the day included a tour of the facility, which features high-tech workshops, replica industrial facilities and classrooms.

Amanda Drew, head of apprenticeships at Colchester Institute, said: “The event was an excellent way to raise awareness of apprenticeships to year ten students and celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2018.

"Young people were inspired by the variety of apprenticeships on offer including the opportunities to progress to degree level apprenticeships.

"Employers were encouraged by the interest young people had in apprenticeships and how these can be used to develop skills.”

The same evening, a series of talks were given by specialist employers to those preparing to take their first steps on the careers ladder.
