Braintree police officers went off-road through muddy fields to help a man who had collapsed after suffering a mental health episode.

Special Sergeant Kirsty Lines and Pc Emma McIntyre-Major were initially called out to a suspected domestic incident in Witham.

However when the pair arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering a mental health crisis and it was clear he was becoming increasingly aggressive and agitated.

When the duo arrived he quickly left his home and headed across the fields towards the train station.

Fearing for the gentleman's safety, the pair follow him, and used their negotiating expertise to reassure him they were there to help.

The man soon collapsed with exhaustion and the officers rushed to assist him, calling an ambulance.

S/Sgt Lines and Pc McIntyre-Major had built up a rapport with the man and managed to convince him to head back to their vehicle, whilst they waited for the ambulance.

They remained with the gentleman during the trip to hospital and luckily were there upon his arrival at A&E when he became aggressive - but the officers managed to reassure and calm him down.

The man was later seen by the mental health team at the hospital and given the support he needed.

S/Sgt Line has been part of Essex Police's Special Constabulary for more than a year. The volunteers gives up her own time to help keep her community safe.
