Burger Junkie, in Newland Street, was unveiled last night having undergone a five-month transformation. a new burger joint, opened its doors to the public on Wednesday, July 5 at 6pm.

It has opened in the former Hold the Anchovies restaurant which closed in February.

It replaces Hold The Anchovies, the restaurant which closed down last year, but under the same ownership and staff.

Burger Junkie opens seven days a week from 11.30am to 9pm.

On Sundays the restaurant will close early at 6pm.

Downstairs and opening soon will be a retro-gaming area, which customers can visit after their meal.

Owner Dax Whitnell decided to open the ‘funky’ burger bar as the food had always been a passion of his. said he needed to replace the restaurant since Hold the Anchovies was only used for special occasions.

He said: “Our burger joint will be original, one you won’t see anywhere else.

“The build took us five months and longer than expected, but we had to research the original recipes ourselves and try everything out.

“What’s different about Burger Junkie is that all our burgers come from local sources.

“Our buns come from Tiptree Patisserie and our beef is supplied by Humphrey and Sons abattoir in Chelmsford, and that makes all the difference in taste, and we’re completely unique.

“Plus, once you’re inside the restaurant, it doesn’t stop there.

“A Burger Junkie Patty is hand pressed metal to metal with our custom made press to lock in all the beautiful juices that come from our beef.

“Our beef is made of nothing other than pure beef from British blue cattle with 20 per cent fat which gives the ultimate taste and holds together.

“This is unlike many other patties that are dry and fall apart because of cheap cuts and low fat.”

Customers can order at the counter and their food will be brought over to them.

A classic junkie hamburger costs £4.99, and Burger Junkie also serves special burgers including ‘The Hangover’ - with bacon, egg, cheese, hash brown and onions.

As well as burgers, the restaurant also has an ice cream bar, with free toppings of marshmallows, sprinkles as well as sauces.

Owner Dax said: “Everyone is welcome to come along and try our food. We’ve got a family friendly atmosphere and a unique taste, so come on down.”

Burger Junkie opens seven days a week from 11.30am to 9pm and until 6pm on Sunday.

On Sundays the restaurant will close early at 6pm.
